Anaesthesia Compensation Claims

Fortunately, the UK has quite a good medical track record and a majority of our operations here are performed smoothly without a hitch. However, nobody is perfect, and surgeons can sometimes make negligent mistakes which have a huge impact on their patient. The application of anaesthetic is very important during surgery, keeping a fine balance with the patient’s consciousness and the anaesthetic administration. This careful balance is not always maintained; approximately 2 in 1000 people will suffer from anaesthetic awareness or errors during surgery.

No Win No Fee Anaesthesia Claims

Our medical negligence solicitors operate a no win, no fee* - pay nothing if you lose agreement, meaning there is no financial risk or hidden costs. We also have over 15 years personal injury claims experience, along with a 98% success rate and over £25 million recovered in damages.

At Accident Assistance we understand that claims of this nature can be a complicated and stressful time for the victim. We exist to try and make the process as stress free and easy as possible, call our solicitors on 0161 763 8260 or tell us about the anaesthetic error you experienced.

How It Happens

Being conscious for any amount of time during an operation is likely to be very distressing for the patient, often leading to a number of mental injuries such as post-traumatic stress disorder. Anaesthetic awareness is caused by a lack of anaesthetic during an operation causing the patient to become conscious. There are usually 2 ways that this happens: the machinery applying the anaesthetic could be faulty or the amount of anaesthetic applied is insufficient enough to keep the patient unconscious.

Consequences of Anaesthetic Errors

However, anaesthetic negligence can reach further than just awareness, extending further than the general side effects that would be expected after such treatment. Some examples are:

  • Failure to properly monitor the patient’s breathing while under anaesthetic which can lead to brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain.
  • Applying the wrong dose of anaesthetic can cause unnecessary discomfort and pain.
  • Lack of care when initially applying the anaesthetic can lead to an induced coma or, in rare cases, death.
  • Negligence when applying the dose of anaesthetic can also lead to short-term or permanent paralysis caused by spinal or nerve damage.
